Welfare issues in ornamental fish

In Switzerland, ornamental fish are the largest group of kept pet animals. The spectrum of different species is enormous; more than 2000 species are kept in marine and freshwater aquaria. Nevertheless, there are only scarce information available about origin, husbandry conditions or health status. The Centre for Fish and Wildlife Health (FIWI) investigates – as a national competence center for fish diseases – ornamental fish from zoos and private aquaria.

The aim of the project is the retrospective evaluation of diagnostic reports of ornamental fish at the FIWI from the last 10 years to answer the following questions:

How many ornamental fish kept in zoos or private aquaria are investigated at FIWI per year?

Which species are most commonly kept? Which are the problems most often encountered?

This work willbe conducted in lollaboration with the Swiss Animal Welfare Association.
