Submissions

For each submission and personal delivery, prior contact and an enclosed, completed examination request are necessary. Please also note the sample acceptance times (Monday to Friday 8.00 - 12:00 and 14:00 - 16:00).

Detailed instructions for submission, including the material to be submitted and the examinations that can be carried out with it, can be found here:

The Fish Diagnostics Department assumes responsibility for the samples only from the time of their arrival at the Institute.

Investigation request

Each submission must be accompanied by a completed application for examination:

Condition of the samples

A complete examination for causes of disease is only possible on diseased but still living fish.

  • Many pathogens leave the infected fish shortly after its death.
  • Fish carcasses spoil within a few hours, especially if they are left in the water.
  • With advanced decomposition, germ dispersal into all organs is to be expected.

With dead animals, the examination possibilities are therefore limited.

Number of fish per sample

  • Stock survey: 5 - 6 fish
  • Hatchlings and juveniles: 15 - 20 animals
  • Ornamental fish: sick animal
