We are pleased to share a new publication by our doctoral students Yael Langenegger and Isabelle Wethli in the Journal of Wildlife Diseases. The case series describes subaortic stenosis in four free-ranging Eurasian lynx from Switzerland’s Alpine and Jura populations. The findings suggest that subaortic stenosis (SAS) may be linked to the recurrently observed cardiac pathologies in Swiss lynx and could be associated with the low genetic variability of these populations. The study highlights the importance of integrating pathology, clinical, and genetic data into conservation strategies to support healthy and viable wildlife populations. Congratulations to all authors on this valuable contribution to lynx health research!
The Institute for Fish and Wildlife Health and the Institute of Parasitology warmly congratulate their jointly supervised PhD candidate Pia Cigler on receiving the First Prize for Best Doctoral Presentation (SVVLD track; https://vstt.ch/svvld/) at the annual meeting of the Swiss Veterinarians (STT; https://vstt.ch/). The awarded presentation focused on the development of a novel in-house indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) to investigate the humoral immune response of Alpine swifts to Trypanosoma spp. This innovative work contributes important new insights into emerging avian trypanosomiasis in Swiss Alpine swifts. Congratulations to Pia and to all collaborators involved in this interdisciplinary project!
Our Master's student Livia Brühlhart has been awarded the Alumni Prize for the best non-clinical veterinary Master's thesis. Her thesis provided important findings on the euthanasia of ornamental fish using clove oil. Congratulations!
Soyomi Seibold has successfully completed her doctoral thesis on “Nodular Gill Disease (NGD) in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in Swiss fish farms – confirmation of the amoeba species involved” – congratulations!
Registration is now open for the Swiss Fish Welfare Meeting 2026!
Lynxes in Switzerland suffer from genetic diseases, as research by Janna Niehaus at FIWI shows. SRF Einstein investigates possible solutions.
Based on the students' evaluations, the faculty honored Nicolas Diserens on September 15 for outstanding achievements in teaching (“Fish in Veterinary Medicine”). Congratulations!
