Wildlife as a potential SARS-CoV-2 reservoir in Switzerland

In order to understand the dynamics of the pandemic, susceptible animal species must be recorded and the risk of the virus spreading in the animal world must be assessed. Only then can the necessary protective measures for animals and humans be adapted. We are studying animal species likely to be susceptible to the SARS-CoV-2 virus (lynxes, wolves, feral cats, foxes, golden jackals, marten-like animals, deer, and roe deer).
Both direct (PCR) and indirect (serological) tests will be performed at the ZKS of the Vetsuisse Faculty Zurich. The first results are expected in 2022.
We would like to thank the hunting administrations, the wildlife rescue centers as well as the FIWI team for their support in collecting the samples.
Funding is provided by the FOEN and the FSVO.
